1. CELLS
Elementary No benchmark about cells at the elementary level
Benchmark 1 "Demonstrate evidence that all parts of living things are made of cells."Benchmark 2 "Explain why specialized cells are needed by plants and animals."
- Cells Alive - Cells (III.1.MS.1)
- Contains general information about cells and contains "movies" for students to view of different cells. There are several different topics to choose and the visual images have captions for easy understandings.
- Cells are Us - Cells (III.1.MS.1)
- Take a journey as the human body goes from egg and sperm to life, explaining the splitting of chromosomes in very simple terms.
- Cytographics - Cells (III.1.MS.1)
- There are many videos showing cells. The best for this benchmark is called "Three eggs of the African Toad." This video clip shows a single cell dividing until it becomes a tadpole. Great example that "living things are made of cells."
- Function of Cells in Organisms - Cells (III.1.MS.1)
- Describes how living organisms are made of cells, uses plant cells as an example. Has other information and links that don't apply to the benchmark. This site offers beautiful graphics and numerous links to plant and animal physiology. Easy to read and clear, concise information.
- The Virtual Cell - Cells (III.1.MS.1)
- Students observe the parts of a cell through a virtual cell that they can rotate, zoom in on, cut for an inside view. Students can read definition and listen to the pronunciation of each part
- Cell-Tissure-Body Explorer Interactive Animated Atlas - Cells (III.1.MS.2)
- This site is a teacher resource site that provides information on many different human body cells. Pictures, definitions of cell parts, and quizzes are available for each cell chosen.
- Cells and Cell Structure - Cells (III.1.MS.2) New
- A very detailed and informational tour regarding the cell with many diagrams. This site also has links to chemistry4kids and physics4kids.
- I Can Do That - Cells (III.1.MS.2) New
- A fun tour about cells guided by cartoon cells. Students will enjoy the funny names given to the different types of cells as well as the interactions among cells as they learn about bacteria, animal, and plant cells. Good diagrams.
- Microbe Detectives - Cells (III.1.MS.2)
- Grades 5-8. Students learn about different types of CELLS: (eukaryotic and prokaryotic) (amoebas, paramecium, yeast, etc.) Students are trying to find the culprit microbe that is causing a group of students to be ill. They will conduct research from the given links and eliminate microbes that are not "guilty" and decide which microbe is guility. They will use clues to complete a worksheet and prepare a presentation of their verdict and evidence at the end of the project. Arubric is included for the evaluaton. This can also be used as an activity for a lesson on the IMMUNE SYSTEM.
- Plants 5F2 - Cells (III.1.MS.2)
- This site provides a general outline of some of the specialized functions of plants. Photosynthesis, reproduction, and differences between green and non-green plants. There are some suggested activities provided at the end of each outline.
Benchmark 1 "Explain how multicellular organisms grow, based on how cells grow and reproduce."Benchmark 2 "Compare and contrast ways in which selected cells are specialized to carry out particular life functions"
- Cells Alive - Cells (III.1.HS.1&2)
- "Cells Alive" is an excellent web site that allows the student to observe color photographs, 3-D diagrams, and informational descriptions of various viruses, prokaryotic, and Eukaryotic cells and their organelles. It also includes an interactive testing tool, which allows the student to evaluate their progress.
- Cell Division Genetic Consequences - Cells (III.1.HS.1)
- This is a good site for the students to learn or review the basics of mitosis and meiosis. This interactive site allows students to view images in order to determine which stage of mitosis/meiosis is occuring.
- Bio Manual 1: Molecules and Cells - Cells (III.1.HS.1)
- Students can explore the process of mitosis through a series of lessons/exercises. Includes nice diagrams, step by step directions, glossary terms, supply list for needed materials and supplementary resources. An excellent site for lessons pertaining to mitosis. Gives lesson plans, activities for students, teachers guide, knowledge mapping, alternative ideas, glossary terms, etc. Go to the home page to find other subject matter on biology.
- Welcome to the Cell - Cells (III.1.HS.1&2)
- Provides information on cell composition and function. Quizzes, diagrams and actual photographs are included. Detailed information on various cell types is also provided. A glossary of cell related terms and a "cell gallery" make this site particularly useful.
- The Biology Project and Cell Biology Problem Sets and Tutorials - Cells (III.1.HS.1)
- The site is designed to introduce events that occur in the cell cycle. Explore and learn about the process of mitosis, meiosis, types of cells and structures of cells through photographs, animations, diagrams and written descriptions.
